Steve, Cathy, and Nicholas -- Steve is ready to tackle another 5K race (created 2011-08-25)

I have been working at running and have gradually gotten back to the point where I'm ready to tackle another 5K race. I drove to iLan Park, ran along the trail to Tomahawk Park, did a small loop and then returned. I ran 2.9 miles in 46 minutes at an average speed of 3.8 miles per hour. At that pace, I'd run a 5K (3.1 miles) in about 49 minutes. Here's a map of the route.

Map of practice run

It was a nice route that was mostly in the shade and fairly level throughout. My short term goal is to run in a sponsored 5K race, possibly next month, and finish in less than 50 minutes and without having to walk at any point during the run. My longer term goal is to improve my speed (speed is more important to me than distance), possibly to a 40 minute 5K run. My dream would be to run a 5K in 30 minutes, but I want to work towards that goal very gradually.

What now?
