This is a trial run of my website using Quarto.
This website has gone through five iterations.
- 1997 Generation 1. I started a website using Microsoft FrontPage. Only pages from 1999 onward remain.
- 2008 Generation 2. I switched to Adobe Dreamweaver.
- 2013 Generation 3. I kept the Dreamweaver site, but started writing new pages using WordPress.
- 2019 Generation 4. I decided to convert both Dreamweaver site and the Wordpress site to blogdown. This has been a difficult transition.
- 2024 Generation 5. The conversion to blogdown was incomplete, but I started experimenting with quarto. This is in the middle of transitioning away from the Dreamweaver site and the WordPress site. The blogdown site is transitioning easily because blogdown and quarto are so similar. The untransitioned pages from the Dreamweaver site and the WordPress site are slowly being worked on.
There are well over two thousand webpages across all generations. When I update pages in the blogdown and now the quarto site, I try to maintain links back to the Dreamweaver site and the WordPress site. I am also gradually replacing Generation 2 and Generation 3 webpages with dummy pages that point to the Generation 4 and now the Generation 5 websites. I want to keep the earlier generation pages on the web because some of these pages have been linked to by others. I also want to make sure that any leads to my web pages that come through search engines like Google are still active.
This transition has been time consuming, but I have tried to upgrade and improve some of the older webpages while transitioning them. Some pages (especially those from Generation 2) have poorly formatted text, bad crosslinks and missing images. Please be patient as I try to fix things.
