One of the most common questions I hear is how to enter and analyze data from a two by two crosstabulation. It is not immediately obvious, especially to beginners, how to get started with this type of data. This is part 1 of a series of 6 handouts on this topic (view handouts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). There is also a video version of this topic. Part 6 explains how to remove weighting from your data set and shows what a crosstabulation looks like without weighting.
Select DATA | WEIGHT CASES from the menu.
In the dialog box shown above, select the DO NOT WEIGHT CASES option. Then click on the OK button.
The brief message shown above appears in the PASW Statistics Viewer window to remind you that cases are no longer weighted. When you select ANALYZE | DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS | CROSSTABS from the menu, PASW/SPSS remembers the entries in the ROW(S) and COLUMN(S) fields as well as the options you selected under the STATISTICS and CELLS buttons.
The table shown above has only one entry for each cell and a total of only four observations.
The odds ratio and relative risks are all equal to 1.000. How boring! If you get set of tables like these, it means that you forgot to weight your data.
